Beyond Oversight: The Purpose Driven Board

Thursday, May 24
3:15-4:45 p.m.
Room: Baltimore Convention Center, Room 323

Boards of Directors is a general term that can be used to describe the governing bodies of public, private and non-profit organizations. In Community and Public Transportation they exercise fiduciary responsibilities in an organization and provide oversight and support for those charged with conducting the day-to-day business of an organization. Over time there is a tendency in some boards to duplicate the role of the general manager and "second guess" managerial decisions and leadership. At times this issue is related to the lack of developing a work plan or plan of action for a Board and its members. A "purpose driven board" is one where policymakers assist the organization and its management move their institutions forward together. Part of the process must address defining these roles and responsibilities. This session is designed to help managers of organizations and administrative leaders establish ways to help boards fulfill their unique role in sharing the work that creates opportunities for an organization. It includes looking at areas where Boards can fill vital roles for managers especially in times of limited administrative financing and costs.
