History of STAR Awards

The STAR Awards program was initiated by the Beverly Foundation in 2000 as a research effort to gather information about programs that served senior passengers, and to award "the best of the best" survey respondents for their excellence in service delivery. The survey/application and application process was continued annually for thirteen years. It collected information on more than 1,000 unduplicated transportation services that provided rides to older adults. More than 900 of those services included volunteer drivers. The resulting database included self-reported data on passengers, drivers, vehicles, and general operations as well as information about the transportation needs of senior passengers and the assistance provided to them by transit providers. From 2000 through 2013, the Beverly Foundation conveyed 143 STAR Awards to 125 organizations in 47 states (and Puerto Rico) that provide transportation to older adults. The awards totaled more than $1,000,000.
