Coordinating Volunteer Transportation with Public and Human Services Transportation

Volunteer driver programs are often integral components of community transportation for older adults. This is especially the case in rural areas and for frail elders who require door-to-door or door-through-door assistance.

Of course a great deal depends on the specifics of transportation in a service area--some of the finest volunteer transportation programs are part of or were initiated by transportation agencies. Other independent volunteer transportation programs coordinate with and complement public and/or human service transportation. In general, transportation services should be made more available, attractive, and accessible to senior passengers.

The following resources highlight some of the most effective practices in volunteer and senior transportation, and provide information on developing and maintaining a volunteer driver program.
